The Central Valley Community Foundation awarded the Foundation for Fresno County Public Library a $10,000 grant in 2016 to establish La Música en los Parques: la celebración de la cultura latina, an interactive, traveling concert series celebrating Hispanic culture across the Central Valley.

La Música en los Parques is a free concert series taking place in public parks throughout Fresno County and features bilingual musical programs targeted at entertaining and educating children in low-income, Spanish-speaking communities. Throughout the fall of 2016, La Música en los Parques hosted four programs at community parks through collaboration with other organizations, including a back to school-themed event at the West Fresno Family Resource Center and an event celebrating Día de Los Muertos in downtown Sanger.

Other events included live mariachi and a Fiesta Days celebration, both held at Malaga Park.

In addition to showcasing high quality, local talent, the project also features a traveling instrument laboratory, allowing children and teens to play guitar, keyboards, and drums during the event. Through creative play and the exposure to live music, children attending each La Música en los Parques event develop socio-emotional, motor, and cognitive skills.

The concert series also offers more than free, live entertainment– the Foundation for Fresno County Public Library also features a mobile “pop up” library at each performance. This mobile library allows participants at each event to obtain a library card on-site, and even check out bilingual materials, including books and music.

Each performance of La Música en los Parques is recorded by students from the local Community Center for Arts and Technology. Past and future performances will be available for viewing online.

If you didn’t have a chance to catch any of the performances of La Música last year, there are several more upcoming dates for 2017! The next performance is scheduled for Friday, March 10, 2017, at 10:00 AM at the J.O. Eaton Park in downtown Orange Cove. Local author and musician Aracely d’Alvarado will be present at the event performing children’s stories and songs in both English and Spanish.
