Impact Media Fund & Education Lab

From its inception more than 50 years ago, the Central Valley Community Foundation (CVCF) has pursued excellence in philanthropy management as the nexus between area nonprofits and the donors who fund them. In 2014, the CVCF Board of Directors adopted a deliberate, directional shift that positioned the organization to provide much needed community leadership in pursuit of effective philanthropy that transforms the region by tackling our most intractable and persistent challenges.

That pivot to community leadership requires an ongoing exchange of information to identify problems, curate and interpret data, educate and engage citizens, amplify local voices, break down barriers, develop viable solutions, socialize ideas, measure and track progress, improve accountability, and drive transformation. To that end, CVCF has established a Designated Project called The Impact Media Fund (Media Fund).

The Media Fund exists to manage and fund projects and programs that drive transformation and improve our community through research, community engagement and education, solutions-based and investigative journalism, and storytelling throughout California’s 6-county Central San Joaquin Valley. The Media Fund will prioritize CVCF’s regional transformation strategies: Workforce and education, jobs and the economy, neighborhoods, and environment.

Projects within the Media Fund will be directed by CVCF staff in coordination with consultants, stakeholders, educational and community partners, local journalists, and/or other vendors. Funding for the Media Fund will come from a variety of public, private, and/or philanthropic sources.

The Central Valley Community Foundation maintains control over the disbursement of all funds and the approval of all programs and projects. While donors and contributors may direct funds to specific projects, they do not have editorial control over content produced with fund resources, or the interpretation of data. CVCF, the Impact Media Fund, and all related projects will be held to strict donor transparency and editorial independence policies.

Contributions to The Media Fund will be tax deductible as provided by law, and meet the exempt purposes set forth in the Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(3).

Building a team of journalists to bring attention to the education issues critical to the advancement of our community.

The San Joaquin Valley is beset with high poverty rates and a complex web of socioeconomic pressures. But chief among our challenges is chronic low educational attainment.

The Fresno Bee has a plan to create greater awareness of the great work being done, the work that still needs to be done and the root causes of key issues. The solutions-oriented journalism produced by the Education Lab will monitor progress, bring accountability and amplify successes. The result will be a more engaged community — one that creates Fresno’s next generation of stakeholders, business leaders and public servants.

The goal is to create a broad conversation among parents, students, teachers and others in Fresno and the central San Joaquin Valley. We will do this by providing essential, solutions-oriented journalism and regular opportunities to engage.

This goal will be met by:

  • 1 weekly enterprise story with video and photos that build understanding of the challenges, successes and opportunities in our education communities.
  • 2 – 4 daily stories per week that leverage data, offer high-utility news or let readers know how they can engage over the same timeframe.
  • Potential publication across McClatchy’s five California news organizations – Fresno, Sacramento, Merced, Modesto and San Luis Obispo.
  • Regular in-person listening sessions.
  • A quarterly webinar, where we’ll share what we’re working on, what’s worked and input on the issues we should cover next.
  • Public events in Fresno to put the spotlight on this topic at least once a year.
