About the Paul (Doc) and Jean Chaffee Memorial Scholarship

The Paul (Doc) and Jean memorial scholarship is open to graduating seniors who are interested in the life sciences, in particular, the study of zoology, biology, or pre-vet. The applicant will have shown extraordinary academic growth, community involvement, school participation, and financial need. It is also open to applicants wanting to continue their education and is enrolled in a program leading to employment. The Award is between $1,000 and $5,000 dollars.
60% Grade point improvement in grades 9-12
25% Community and School activities
15% Financial Need
Your application will be judged based on the following criteria:
Dr. Paul S. Chaffee was the longtime director of the Fresno Chaffee Zoo and passed away in 1990. The Fresno Chaffee Zoo was re-named in 1990 in honor of Doc and his love for animals.
About the James B. McClatchy 25 Year Club Scholarship

James B. McClatchy was a four-generation family owner of The McClatchy Company, which publishes The Fresno Bee. His father, Carlos McClatchy, was the first editor of The Fresno Bee when it was founded in 1922. James devoted his life to journalism and was highly respected for his efforts on behalf of freedom of the press. The scholarship program is managed through the Bee Endowed Scholarship Fund at the Central Valley Community Foundation. The Bee Endowed Scholarship Fund was established at the wishes of James McClatchy's estate.
25 Year Scholarship awards will be given without regard to race, color, creed, ancestry, religion, sex, physical or mental disability, national origin, marital status, medical condition, sexual orientation, age, or any other basis protected by federal, state, or local law.
An employee or former employee of The Fresno Bee currently eligible participate in the 25 Year Club; OR
An immediate family member, which is defined as a spouse, registered domestic partner, child, step-child, grandchild, step-grandchild, great grandchild, or step-great grandchild.
Eligible applicants must be:
Scholarship recipients are selected based on the following criteria:
Letters of recommendation;
Applicant's participation in school and community activities;
Quality of the submitted personal essay/statement of educational goals;
Applicant's work experience.
All applications will be reviewed by the scholarship committee and will be evaluated using the current information submitted with the 2018 application, independent of any prior submissions.
Scholarship awards are one-time payments, ranging from $1,000 - $5,000 per approved applicant. All awarded applicants will be notified via email by June 29, 2018 and will be responsible for submitting additional information to the Central Valley Community Foundation to process their scholarship disbursement. Once all required documentation has been received, funds will be disbursed beginning in August, 2018.
Scholarship recipients must enroll and use the James B. McClatchy 25 Year Club Scholarship for their educational program no later than the end of the 2018-2019 school year. The scholarship will be paid directly to the educational institution for the use of the scholarship recipient. Each educational institution must be described in the Internal Revenue Code (IRC) § 170(b)(1)(A)(ii). Multiple year needs will require annual application processing. Recipients have no obligations to The Fresno Bee. The applicant will be responsible for notifying the scholarship committee of any change of address, phone number, or other pertinent information during the application process.
Revisions to Program
The general conditions and procedures under which scholarships are made are subject to periodic review by The Fresno Bee and the Central Valley Community Foundation, including termination of the program.
