Slamming Leukemia: The PJ Alvendia Foundation Fund
About the Slamming Leukemia: The PJ Alvendia Foundation Fund
The PJ Alvendia Foundation is a non-profit organization committed to supporting the battle against leukemia. It was founded in May of 2017 by PJ’s niece, Lea Hernandez. Through their publicity and events, such as the blood drive and tennis tournament fundraiser, the foundation intends to raise awareness about leukemia and fundraise for research.
Philip John “PJ” G. Alvendia was born on November 23, 2001. He grew up excelling in school and loving sports. In middle school and high school, he took part in football, basketball, baseball, and track. His favorite teams were the Los Angeles Lakers, the San Francisco Giants, and the New England Patriots. PJ also enjoyed spending time with his family and his friends.
Just before Thanksgiving in 2015, when PJ was just 14 years old, he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Despite having to undergo chemotherapy treatments and having to constantly be in the hospital, PJ continued to smile through it all. He bravely accepted his diagnosis, sharing with a close friend that he would rather be fighting than someone else. “God has a plan. I’d rather it be me going through this than anyone else.” On December 19, 2016, at the age of 15, PJ passed away. He family and friends miss him greatly.
Throughout his battle, he inspired his friends, strengthened bonds, and instilled hope that one day Leukemia will be cured.
